Chapter 14

“MAGNOLIA I’M IN the mood for some shrimp. How about I swing by the bar and pick up two orders of some steamed ones before I come over?” I asked. “Great, see ya in a few.” I put down my phone and picked out what I would wear from my clothes stacked on the built in shelves on my side of the loft. I had decided it was easier to have them there than in the built in dresser on Carson’s side. The shelves were narrow in depth and width but adequate for stacking tee shirts and shorts. I wondered if the carved ship wheel attached in the center of the middle shelf was there when the cottage was built or added later to remind you of the cottage’s age. Whatever the reason, it worked. Carson and I had fallen in love with the place. Very few places could compete with the combination of its charm and location. Magnolia and Eric would have no trouble renting this bit of paradise once we were gone.

I packed an overnight bag and headed to the bar for shrimp. I pulled in the parking lot. It was evident that the dinner crowd had yet to arrive. I walked in and went straight to the kitchen to place my order with Drew before taking a seat at the bar to wait.

“You picking up supper?” asked Dave while loading the beer cooler.

“Yep. Taking some steamed shrimp to Magnolia’s,” I replied.

“Kind of early aren’t you?” Dave remarked.

“Magnolia’s going to a friend’s house to watch a movie. We’re gonna eat before she goes,” I explained.

“It’s good she gets a little adult time,” Dave said.

“I agree. She needs it if she wants to keep her sanity,” I answered.

“How about Candace winning the pot again last night. Somebody else has got to win next Sunday or she’ll be unbearable to be around,” Dave said.

“She does like to rub it in,” I replied with a chuckle.

“Candace said you and Carson caught the crab the dip was made from. Wasn’t Tony gonna gather oysters too? He didn’t mention going, did he decide not to?”

“He went. Carson, Tony and I ate them yesterday afternoon,” I replied.

“I wonder where he went. He usually goes right there on the bay, near the cottage,” Dave said. I looked at him puzzled at his interest then decided he was asking to see if there was a new location he needed to know about.

“That’s where he went. Don’t worry Dave, if he had a better oyster location I’m sure he would share it with you,” I said.

Dave chuckled and replied, “You’re right, Tony would share.”

I turned my back to the bar to survey the patrons. The crew from the Lady Luck were in full swing and Carson was chatting with them as she bussed the table next to them. She checked to see if they wanted another round. Carson walked behind the bar and pulled another pitcher of beer to fill their request.

“Ordering shrimp I bet. That’s all she talked about this morning, Dave.
